Athens is a city where history and modernity coexist in harmony — and sometimes chaos, if we're talking traffic. Whether you're coming for its ancient wonders or its vibrant energy and food scene, Athens offers some truly memorable hotels. From sleek, minimalist retreats to classic, opulent properties, here’s our guide to the best places to stay in Athens — from affordable luxury to ultra-exclusive escapes.

1. Hotel Grande Bretagne – Historic elegance

One of Athens’ most historic and majestic properties, Hotel Grande Bretagne blends neoclassical architecture with modern comforts, making it an iconic symbol of luxury since 1874. It offers unrivaled views of the Acropolis and Parliament from its rooftop restaurant and rooftop swimming pool. Guests can pamper themselves at the gorgeous GB Spa, which features an indoor pool. Dining options include the scenic Roof Garden Restaurant, the Winter Garden serving breakfast and Afternoon Tea, and more informal eateries. There’s also a bar and cigar lounge named after Alexander the Great.

Budget: High-end luxury / Stars: 5

2. King George – A royal boutique experience

The King George, a next-door sister property of the Grande Bretagne, offers a more intimate, boutique experience. Dating from 1930, the hotel blends classical furnishings with modern amenities to create an atmosphere of sophisticated elegance. Many rooms overlook the Parthenon and Syntagma Square. The Michelin-starred Tudor Hall Restaurant offers a gourmet experience, and there's a small gym for guests. The King George does not have an on-site swimming pool — except if you stay in the Penthouse Suite, where you’ll have your own!

3. The Dolli – The highest level of hip

For design lovers, The Dolli is a contemporary luxury boutique that offers a one-of-a-kind design experience. Housed in a 1925 mansion designed by neo-eclectic artist Andreas Kriezis, the hotel delivers a luxurious, art-forward stay. It features a gorgeous rooftop restaurant with both indoor and outdoor seating, plus a rooftop infinity pool with direct views of the Acropolis. Often voted the best hotel in Greece, The Dolli is pricey, but it certainly delivers with its sleek design and impeccable service. If money’s no object, you really can't stay in a more fabulous hotel.

Budget: Ultra-luxury boutique / Stars: 5

4. Electra Metropolis – Affordable luxury

For those seeking a chic, modern experience without the ultra-high price tag, Electra Metropolis Athens is an excellent choice. This stylish hotel offers fantastic service and is centrally located near Syntagma Square and Ermou Street shopping. Designed by Greek architect Patroclos Karantinos, the tall, modernist building boasts sleek interiors. Guests can enjoy a gym, spa, and several dining options, including a rooftop restaurant and bar with breathtaking views of the Acropolis. Similar views can be enjoyed from the small rooftop pool and from many of the rooms — some featuring balconies perfect for breakfast with a view.

5. Perianth Hotel – Intimate boutique

Perianth Hotel is a striking neo-modernist gem that celebrates contemporary Greek art. Nestled in Agias Eirinis Square, it’s perfectly located near many of Athens’ major attractions, yet far enough from the crowds to provide a peaceful retreat. Designed by the acclaimed design studio K-Studio, Perianth offers minimalist rooms with views of the Acropolis. For those seeking balance, the hotel features a spa offering treatments, yoga, meditation, and martial arts. However, to enjoy the rooftop plunge pool, you'll need to book the Penthouse Suite.

6. Neoma – Chic and minimalist

Neoma redefines boutique luxury in Athens with its sleek, minimalist design by the acclaimed K-Studio. Featuring concrete walls, floor-to-ceiling windows, and curated artworks, it creates a sophisticated atmosphere with only 16 rooms. The rooftop is a standout, featuring a seasonal plunge pool and the Neoma Sky Restaurant & Bar, where guests can enjoy panoramic views of the Acropolis. For a unique dining experience, Let’s Bubble offers temperature-controlled transparent domes, allowing guests to dine under the stars in comfort. With its blend of contemporary design and exceptional dining, Neoma is surprisingly affordable.

7. Four Seasons Astir Palace – Elegance on the Athenian Riviera

Nestled on the pine-fringed Astir Peninsula, just 30 minutes from Athens, Four Seasons Astir Palace is perfect for those seeking luxury away from the city. Once a favorite of Aristotle Onassis and Jackie Kennedy, the resort reopened as a Four Seasons in 2019. On our last stay, we were impressed by the top-tier fitness facilities, including a gym, tennis academy, water sports, two pools, and a spa inspired by Hippocrates. Dining includes Michelin-starred Pelagos and the casually elegant Mercato, both offering gorgeous sea views. Despite high room rates, it’s nearly always fully booked – ideally, book a year in advance!

Budget: Ultra-luxury / Stars: 5

From the historic elegance of the Hotel Grande Bretagne to the artsy Perianth and the minimalist Neoma, Athens is home to a remarkable array of memorable hotels. The only question is: what’s your mood, and which one will be your base for exploring this timeless city?
